Mail Order Debate: A Record of an Ongoing Discussion

A few weeks ago, Tom Ross, a friend of mine, posted the entirety of his 26 page letter to me as a comment at the end of the post detailing “my story”. This was his second letter to me, and was a response to my response to his first letter. Anyway, the way he posted his letter resulted in much of the formatting and some of the Greek words in his letter to be lost. I have copied the letter from that post, and added formatting from his original physical letter, and posted that on my auxiliary blog. By linking to it from here, I can both make it easier to read, and also make the comments of “my story” post to be much less daunting. I will post a link to this post there.

In providing a formatted version of his letter, I also am providing my original letter/response to him. This will provide readers with the whole context.

Most readers will not bother to read this whole exchange. But for some, it will be interesting, and I hope informative. I belive my response to him provides a good defense of several points many IFBs would take issue with me over Calvinism and other doctrinal points. I also belive Tom did not adequately hear my response, and has not really debunked it in his 2nd letter. My response to Tom’s 2nd letter is forthcoming and will be linked here as well, when it is finished.

So here are the links to the discussion:

1) Tom’s initial questions in his 1st letter to me.

2) My response/answer to his questions.

3) Tom’s 2nd letter in response to my letter.

(This letter by Tom was originally posted at the end of this post, which is basically my letter to friends mentioned in these letters.)

  1. Bob,
I have thoroughly enjoyed the letters and posts about “My Story.” I think it is so indicative about the misunderstanding in a lot of Fundmentalism about Reformed Theology. Also, it demonstrates the common fallacies propound in that circle (fundamental “traditions” as it were).

  2. Mathew,

I am glad you have benefited from their posting. I know others who have as well. That gives me motivation to continue defending what I believe and confronting what are serious problems with some of the beliefs I used to hold. I hope to do so charitably, though.

For the sake of the unity of the faith to the Glory of God,

    Bob Hayton
