I have been meaning to post on this song for quite a while, now. It is by one of my favorite CCM groups, Casting Crowns. I have blogged about their newest CD, here.
This song has a phenomenal message. It paints a true portrait of our unworthiness and our God’s gloriousness. It magnifies the gospel and preaches the message of substitutionary atonement and salvation by grace through faith alone apart from our works. It is tastefully performed and truly directs the heart to Christ. I hope you get a blessing from the words of this song.
Who Am I
Written by Mark Hall
Music by Casting Crowns
Song based on Psalms 52 and 139 and Ephesians 2
Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth
Would care to know my name
Would care to feel my hurt
Who am I, that the Bright and Morning Star
Would choose to light the way
For my ever wandering heart
Not because of who I am
But because of what You’ve done
Not because of what I’ve done
But because of who You are
Chorus:
I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
A vapor in the wind
Still You hear me when I’m calling
Lord, You catch me when I’m falling
And You’ve told me who I am
I am Yours, I am Yours
Who Am I, that the eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love and watch me rise again
Who Am I, that the voice that calmed the sea
Would call out through the rain
And calm the storm in me
Chorus (again)
I am Yours
Whom shall I fear
Whom shall I fear
‘Cause I am Yours
I am Yours

This Sunday morning, may the message of this song be part of your meditation on the greatness of our salvation–not because of who we are, but because of Who Jesus is; not because of what we have done, but because of what Jesus has done! God bless.

I too like this song. Keep on posting! There are many good songs in the Christian music genre from MOST musical styles. There are poor ones of every style too, but it’s good to see the focus of the greatness of God and the smallness of man in the songs you’ve posted. Thanks. (I’m part of a “worship” team and love it when there are good songs and choruses mixed in with hymns of praise.)
Since we are exhorted to speak and sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, I am glad to see them all being used.
Beautifull song, Bob. Thanks for publishing it.
I’ve heard that song. It is a credit to it’s industry. Speaking of great songs, thanks for commenting on the song, “God, Be Merciful to Me” on my “weekly” devotional this week (I know it’s been two weeks since the last one, but at least “weekly” is a goal!).
Have you gotten a copy of Jars of Clay’s CD, “Redemption Songs”? The very first track is their contemporary version of “God, Be Merciful to Me!” Yet another credit to CCM. You may hear it in its entirety at http://www.jarsofclay.com. Just click on the play button at the bottom of the screen once you get there.
I’ll try to get something else posted soon. Later, Bro!
Thank you all for the good comments. Beckyjoie: my church has a good mix of hymns choruses and songs, also. I appreciate how different styles of music are used and blended into a glorious unified sound of praise.
Capt Headknowldge: I have not heard that CD, although occasionally I hear one of the songs from it played on the radio. I’ll have to check out their rendition when I get back to work (and its highspeed connection).
God Bless!
Bob
I’m thankful to have an excellent Christian radio station in my area. Northwestern College runs “LIFE FM 89.1” here in Sarasota, Florida (www.lifefm891.org) that plays contemporary Christian music, much of it with great quality of lyrics like Casting Crowns’ song listed above.
Larry,
Northwestern College in my neck of the woods (Minneapolis) also has a Christian radio station KTIS 98.5 FM (Life Radio). It is mostly Christian music also. I wonder if they operate the radio station near you, or if there is some other college near you named Northwestern.
Anyway, I appreciate the majority of the music. Some I do not necessarily appreciate so much, but most have good and deep lyrics. The rest is pretty much entertainment, in my book.
Thanks for your comments.
Hey, I finally got my own blogger ‘handle’…..
Bob,
Yes, it’s the same Northwestern College as you mention. I don’t konw how they ended up down here, but I think that the college maintains a following of ‘snowbirds’ here in SW Florida. LIFE FM 89.1 is the best Christian radio station in the area. I agree that some of the music is ‘junk’, but most of it has great content and it is good Christian music. We use some of it in my church (www.gcbcfl.org). Granted that some of the Christian music, like Casting Crowns, isn’t something very popular with the older folks, the lyrics alone give God the glory.
thanks for publishing…
