Spurgeon on Glorying in the Cross

Lately, I have emphasized that glorying in the cross and in the glorious truths of the Gospel is cause for deep and real unity. In this post about the Together for the Gospel conference, I explained that elevating minor positions and secondary issues to cause for separation really minimizes the importance of the Gospel.

In the following quote by Spurgeon, provided by Mark Dever at the Together for the Gospel Blog, I see a focus on glorying in the cross as being more important than standing for secondary issues. Here is the quote followed by some of Dever’s brief comments:

“More and more am I jealous lest any views upon prophecy, church government, politics, or even systematic theology, should withdraw one of us from glorying in the cross of Christ.” (C. H. Spurgeon, Lectures to my Students, I.83). What stops us from so glorying in the cross? This is my threatening enemy. What will encourage us to glory in it all the more? This is my loving friend. 1. It’s amazing how hard it is for fundamentalists to distinguish between “fundamentals” and secondary issues. If they believe in it, it must be a fundamental of the faith, and therefore if you don’t believe in it, then they must remain separate from you! Praise God for deliverance from such a life through the cross of my Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ!

  2. I love Charles Spurgeon,
He is so cut and dry, and so full of real passion! His book Lectures to my students is a great book that I have enjoyed. Good practical advice. I love that he was virtually a Holy-Spirit taught man. I heard that he never went to cemetary. Ooops I mean Seminary!

I am a musician and I would be honored if you would check out my music. All my music is free for download. Anyway, I don’t mean to be a pest, just thought I’d share.

    Thanks,
