Check out a hilarious thread at Sharper Iron: “You might be a fundamentalist if…” (HT: Paleoevangelical). Some of the responses are downright funny. And as one who grew up in fundamentalism, some come too close to home. Mostly this thread has fundamentalists picking on their own quirks and oddities. Enjoy.

Hebrews 6:1 :: King James Version (KJV)
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
The Word of God tells us that we are not to stand still in our faith. Some of us keep going over and over, time after time, the first principles of the oracles of God.
You know, being saved, repenting of sins, baptism in water and in the Holy Ghost, laying on of hands, the resurrection from the dead and eternal judgement.
Which are all very necessary things, but now it is time to move on, for our foundation has been laid.
The Bible teaches that we do not need to be taught again and again but it is time to teach others, so that we, who are mature in faith, may come into a much closer walk with Christ. This we will do if God permits, as the word of God says.
Wow. I don’t have an extra lifetime to spare reading all of those, but as far as I got (page 12), a lot of it sounds familiar. And I was raised Lutheran!
Yea, some are commenting that it is similar to SBC life or other evangelical groups as well. My contribution is on pg. 26.
I don’t want to admit it, but this hits too close to home. My SBC fellowship is being destroyed by fundalmentalists as we blog! (My opinion, of course.) I felt the “WIN ‘EM, WET ‘EM, and WORK ‘EM” right in the heart!
Sorry!

Thanks for the link. Looking back on my SBC days, I am amazed at God’s grace in getting me beyond that. Understanding Reformed Theology is like getting hit by a train: it changes everything.
Reading beyond the lines, I am struck by what could and should have been. All the emphasis on the silly, the emotional, and the minor in place of the of substantial is the real issue. My laughter is tempered by this reality.
If this sort of nonsense-especially the KJV-only farce- is what Fundamentalism has to offer, it deserves to die. It is a parody of itself. It is no wonder the term is a pejorative. As long as Fundamentalism is like this the world will never give it any respect. It deserves none.
But let us all beware: it is easy to laugh at what we used to be, but the Fundamentalists could easily turn the tables on us with “You might be Reformed if….” (Contributions, anyone?)
It helps me to be patient with the weaker brothers when I realize just how weak I am. Paul did not write 1 Cor. 8 just for the Corinthians.
It would, however, help the situation if the Fundamentalists would GROW UP!
