Book Briefs: “Inside the Reformation” compiled by Mark Sengele

Having just concluded a ten week adult SS series on the Reformation, I was excited to get my hands on a new book that introduces children to the world of the Reformation. Inside the Reformation, compiled by Mark Sengele, is a beautifully produced, coffee-table quality book for kids. The pictures and illustrations are top-notch and will captivate young readers.

The book covers such topics as the Holy Roman Empire, world exploration, music, food and medicine in the middle ages, travel, art, architecture and more. Martin Luther is the focus of this work produced by Concordia Publishing House. Some space is devoted to Luther’s wife and other reformers such as Philip Melanchthon, John Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli. Important Reformation events such as Luther’s 95 Theses and the Diet of Worms, as well as significant documents, like the Augsburg Confession and the Book of Concord are also surveyed.

The book is a montage of assorted pictures and information, and no attempt is made to tell the full story of the Reformation, directly. Even so, the collection of engaging images and intriguing facts will spur readers to research further and inquire into the history of the Reformation for themselves. The detail and intricacy of some of the concepts covered in this book make it more suited for children in middle school and above.

This book would make a great resource for the child studying Reformation-era history. It would also serve as a useful addition to a homeschool curriculum covering Church history. I was quite impressed with the quality of the book and am very thankful that such high-quality resources are being made available for our children.

Pick up a copy of this book at any of the following online retailers: Christianbook.com, Amazon or direct from Concordia Publishing House.

About Book Briefs: Book Briefs are book notes, or short-form book reviews. They are my informed evaluation of a book, but stop short of being a full-length book review.

A Survey of the Reformation, pts. 5 & 6: Reformation Doctrine, Total Depravity and Irresistible Grace

This Fall, I’ve been teaching a 10 part Adult Sunday School series called “A Survey of the Reformation: Its History and Doctrine.” The audio is now up for lessons 5 and 6, which move on from the historical introduction into an actual discussion of Reformation doctrine and the five points of Calvinism. Lesson 5 focused on the big picture of Reformation Doctrine with its emphasis on the “5 solas” and God’s sovereignty. Lesson 6 took us into the background of the 5 points of Calvinism. We also covered the total depravity and started explaining irresistible grace. Regarding the 5 points of Calvinism, I’m making use of my explanation of the five points that I keep here on my blog.

The lesson plan for my entire series (which has changed some) is below, and you can download the audio or view the slides from the lessons as they are completed.

The Mouse on the Mayflower

As a child, I remember watching “The Mouse on the Mayflower” on TV a few times. But I’ve looked in vain for it ever since. This year I searched for and found it on Youtube. It is a 45 minute TV special which traces the story of The Mayflower as told from the perspective of the Pilgrims’ church-mouse. After watching it with my kids, I can see that it may be too religious in some places for TV today.

The Mayflower is especially meaningful to me, since John Alden is my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather. I shared my Mayflower lineage once before, on my blog. And I also collected scans from a 1925 World Book Encyclopedia on the Plymouth story. This year, I thought I’d share “The Mouse on the Mayflower” with my viewers.

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you can find some time to enjoy this old classic Thanksgiving themed movie with your family.

This movie is available still on some old VHS copies from Amazon. It is also available on DVD here and here. Learn more about this classic movie at MouseontheMayflower.com.
