R.C. Sproul on Abortion

Tomorrow is the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. In preparation for the celebration of life, Reformation Trust Publishing has published an updated edition of R.C. Sproul’s classic book Abortion: A Rational Look at an Emotional Issue. Westminster bookstore has a sale running for the next 6 days, where you can get the book for 45% off — only $8.25.

Here’s some more info about that book, and then a video clip of R.C. Sproul discussing the book with his son R.C. Sproul Jr. Over the last 20 years, since the book was first published a lot has changed, and R.C. Sproul Sr. gives his thoughts about those changes. At the end of the video clip, R.C. Sproul Sr. concludes with this powerful statement: “If I know anything at all about God, I know that He hates abortion.”

Book Trailer and Great Deal on Republocrat by Carl Trueman

I just finished reading a provocative little book, Republocrat: Confessions of a Liberal Conservative by Carl Trueman (P & R Publishing). I was captivated by Trueman’s writing style and enthralled by his message. I really think this book deserves a widespread hearing.

A fuller review will be forthcoming, but for now, I’d like to offer you the book’s trailer, and encourage you to take advantage of a fantastic sale at Westminster Bookstore. Pick up a copy for only $4.99 (50% off) now through Thursday Oct. 7. This book is worth grappling with and thinking through no matter what side of the political divide you currently find yourself at.

P&R has some additional audio/visual content about this book here. At that link, be sure to check out a brief video clip of Carl Trueman discussing his new book, and also take note of the 50 minute video conversation from Reformed Forums with Dr. Trueman about the book.

Great New Membership @ Challies.Com

Influential Christian blogger and web-designer, Tim Challies has come up with a fantastic membership deal for his readers. I’ve followed his blog off and on for several years now, and his content is always worth reading. He has hosted advertising on his blog for a while and now is hoping this new membership program will help him bless his readers and allow him to limit the advertising on his site.

The deal is quite amazing, actually. Here is what you get for a $39 yearly membership to Friends of Challies (which can be canceled at any time).

  • $10 gift certificate for Westminster Bookstore
  • $10 gift certificate for Reformed Heritage Books (for the next 250 people sign up– his may run out soon)
  • 4 newly released books or DVDs from Zondervan (free shipping)
  • 1 newly released book from Reformed Heritage Books (free shipping)
  • free subscription to Tabletalk magazine from R.C. Sproul’s Ligonier Ministries
  • E-book access to new and forthcoming books from various publishers

  • More deals, coupons, and freebies throughout the year
  • an affiliate program to earn gift certificates from Westminster Bookstore
  • & if you join by April 30th, you will have a chance to win an Amazon Kindle

All of that for only $39 is a good deal in my book. Plus it will help you stay in touch with Challies’ blog which will help your spiritual growth. I say you should consider it. If you don’t mind, use this link when you sign up so I can get credit for recommending this great program to you.

Holiday Book Giveaways

If you read my blog, you probably enjoy books. And, if you’re like me, you love the chance to get books for free! I thought I’d mention a few chances to get free books at this time of year.

  • My pal Shaun Tabatt is at it again with his 12 Days of Christmas Book Giveaway. Although today’s giveaway is a software module for BibleWorks 7 or 8 users, the next four days will likely include free book giveaways. Pay close attention to his blog now through Christmas Eve.
  • A blog I just stumbled upon, Sententiae Nil, is offering a free book in honor of its 200th post. You can enter to win a free copy of Biblical Theology: Retrospect and Prospect, edited by Scott Hafemann (IVP) just by subscribing to his blog and commenting on this post. This contest lasts until 12/26. (On a similar note, I just realized that I passed the 700 post mark around here. My 700th post actually offered a free book, too!)
  • Next, Allen Mickle’s blog is giving out a free Crossway title each month in 2010. You’ll want to subscribe to his blog, and read this post for details.
  • Finally, I should mention online bookswapping as a way to get free books. I keep meaning to devote a post to this, and still plan to. But for now, you should check out bookmooch.com and paperbackswap.com for great book-swapping programs. I’ve used both, and like paperbackswap.com’s features the best. In fact if you sign up to paperbackswap.com (for free) using this link, I’ll get credit for referring you to them. Goodreads.com has a new swapping program which I’ll have to check into as well.
